Matière Noire is a Paris-based creative studio leading new approaches to spacial design. Built on a network of parallel disciplines, our operation cultivates ambivalence, using observational methods to ground its intuitive impulses. Matière Noire is driven by an appetite for the undefined, the hypothetical, the intangible. Its process celebrates unexpected derivations, developing them into bespoke applications of cross-cultural collaboration.

Building on the studio’s deep connection with the legacy of minimalist legend James Turrell, Matière Noire’s executive work for the solo presentation of the artist at Gagosian Le Bourget bridges conceptual research and technical protocols to highlight the atmospheric effect of the artist’s pioneering works. Supervising the overall execution of the show, from plan adaptations and prototyping to phasing and production, Matière Noire used its expertise in scenic design to create an organic workflow combining architecture, video, light design and 3D printing, delivering an immersive space that emphasizes the mastery and layers of Turrell’s practice.
