Matiere Noire is a Paris-based creative studio leading new approaches to spatial design. Built on a network of parallel disciplines, our operation cultivates ambivalence, using observational methods to ground its intuitive impulses. Matiere Noire is driven by an appetite for the undefined, the hypothetical, the intangible. Its process celebrates unexpected derivations, developing them into bespoke applications of cross-cultural collaboration.

Broadwick Live entrusts Matiere Noire with the architectural framework of Magazine Open-Air, a new series of outdoor events unfolding through summer 2026 on the banks of the Thames. Approached as an architectural ensemble, the infrastructure is built around touring pillars are redeployed here as the base of a modular canopy, designed to be broken down as easily as it was erected. The stage’s canopy is pitched at the precise height that frames the city without eclipsing it, its marquee enclosing the technical tools of the dancefloor below - infrastructure and stage conceived as a single unbroken line. Every technical element, from rigging to lighting modules, is made to read as an extension of this modernist skeleton rather than an addition to it, so that London itself remains the backdrop of each event.
