Matière Noire is a Paris-based creative studio leading new approaches to spacial design. Built on a network of parallel disciplines, our operation cultivates ambivalence, using observational methods to ground its intuitive impulses. Matière Noire is driven by an appetite for the undefined, the hypothetical, the intangible. Its process celebrates unexpected derivations, developing them into bespoke applications of cross-cultural collaboration.

Scenography

As if leaping from the haunted dreamscapes of Pol Taburet’s paintings, the spacial design of his exhibition at Lafayette Anticipation is conceived as a transposition of a fictional architectural universe into a 3-dimensional scenography. Lafayette’s labyrinthine space is sectioned by sharp thresholds open onto rooms, or mausoleums, outfitted with windows, moldings, curtains - evoking fragments of domestic comfort. Primary colors and flattened perspectives define the territory between private obsessions and public contemplation, where voodoo amulets, bronze-cast fountains, and moon-faced masks are the pawns of Taburet’s mythological opera.
