Matière Noire is a Paris-based creative studio leading new approaches to spacial design. Built on a network of parallel disciplines, our operation cultivates ambivalence, using observational methods to ground its intuitive impulses. Matière Noire is driven by an appetite for the undefined, the hypothetical, the intangible. Its process celebrates unexpected derivations, developing them into bespoke applications of cross-cultural collaboration.

Nestled in the pines of the Ruka forest, a few steps away from the bustle of the Solstice festival, a pavilion stands alone, an ideally remote site for the study of darkness. In the heart of this enclosed space, a group of visitors is invited to contemplate on and reconnect with darkness. After a few minutes in its isolating embrace, the outside landscape reappears softly, the all-encompassing obscurity allowing the solar variations of the landscape to read more vividly than ever before. Merged in the dark and accompanied by a meditative bass loop composed by conceptual musician Puce Mary, visitors are invited to abandon themselves in a sensorial experience of light and dark.
