Matiere Noire is a Paris-based creative studio leading new approaches to spatial design. Built on a network of parallel disciplines, our operation cultivates ambivalence, using observational methods to ground its intuitive impulses. Matiere Noire is driven by an appetite for the undefined, the hypothetical, the intangible. Its process celebrates unexpected derivations, developing them into bespoke applications of cross-cultural collaboration.

Scenography

For her debut world tour Mas Càra, Bad Gyal calls on Matiere Noire to create a scenography that illustrates both the sensuality of fashion and the grit of the street. From one venue to another, the stage is encased in a modular architecture that moves vertically to fragment or release the space. Starting high, the structure outlines an urban landscape with dramatic backlight. As it meets the stage, it maps domestic settings with soft, cinematic lighting designed to be filmed up-close. Lighting alone chronicles the concert’s movements, playing with what the audience sees and allowing the performance to transition seamlessly. Smoke lends the whole set an atmosphere of mystery - a theatre of proximity built for a voice that thrives on both distance and intimacy.
