The latest offering of Skrillex, CONTRA is conceived as an evolving platform for creative collisions between club music, sonic experimentation and live performance. Commissioned to give this ambition a spatial language, Matiere Noire subverts Kraftwerk's cathedral-like volume, sectioning it into a network of connected sub-stages - miniature ‘clubs’ delineated by walls or platforms - so the night unfolds at the intersection of intimate atmospheres and monumental performances. The lighting borrows its logic from acoustic line arrays: fixtures carried on curved, repeating rigs that sequence the room the way sound itself is sequenced, mobile enough to continually shift how the architecture is perceived. Light becomes a second reading of sound, an instrument and partition in its own right.
