Matiere Noire is a Paris-based creative studio leading new approaches to spacial design. Built on a network of parallel disciplines, our operation cultivates ambivalence, using observational methods to ground its intuitive impulses. Matière Noire is driven by an appetite for the undefined, the hypothetical, the intangible. Its process celebrates unexpected derivations, developing them into bespoke applications of cross-cultural collaboration.

Scenography

Conceived in two phases, the first room, UFO 1, unfolds around a fragmented extension of the stage element. A series of multi-level platforms, composed of equipment panels, rises at the heart of the dance floor. Lighting fixtures, fans, smoke machines, and technical structures are deliberately exposed, asserting an aesthetic drawn from the vocabulary of the festival. This constructed topography generates a multiplicity of viewpoints and encourages a non-frontal reading of the space. The ensemble is overlooked by a constellation of light clusters composed of so-called traditional fixtures, densifying the volumetric perception in the room. In UFO 2, the gesture tightens, becoming radically singular and intensifying the sensation of a bunker. Two truss lines accentuate the vanishing lines and structure the perspective, while at their center a compact accumulation of screens and lighting devices takes form. Here, light no longer seeks to conceal the architecture, but instead reveals its constructive logic. A hybrid language emerges at the intersection of video, light, and structural form, where the fully legible dispositif becomes deliberately asserted.
