Matiere Noire is a Paris-based creative studio leading new approaches to spacial design. Built on a network of parallel disciplines, our operation cultivates ambivalence, using observational methods to ground its intuitive impulses. Matière Noire is driven by an appetite for the undefined, the hypothetical, the intangible. Its process celebrates unexpected derivations, developing them into bespoke applications of cross-cultural collaboration.

Scenography

To situate itself within the context of the former Tempelhof Airport, now transformed into a public park, the scenography draws its formal vocabulary from the spatial and technical imagination of airport architecture. The project is structured around recognisable markers, translated into large-scale scenographic objects. Each tower, conceived as an autonomous entity hosting sound, rises to nearly 20 meters and concentrates a dense assembly of technical equipment. The accumulation of light sources follows a curved geometry directly inspired by line arrays, generating a distinctive form legible from a distance. At the upper level, a ring of fixtures enables 360-degree lighting activation, complemented by smoke diffusion devices that materialise space and visually delineate the area occupied by the 75,000 people. Each tower is punctuated by a skytracer, asserting a strong vertical presence and creating an urban signal perceptible at the scale of the city. This system of technical towers resonates with a lighting device integrated into the historic building. The illumination of the windows reveals the original architectural structure, establishing a dialogue between built heritage and contemporary intervention, reactivating the site’s memory through light.
